I am researching my wife's family history, The Clarks, and our research has taken us back to Brown Clark, born 1800 in Ashford and died 1869 in Eastry.
His occupation is listed as a Miller, I understand there was a Clark family at Eastry mill? The 1851 census shows him as living at 93 Knightrider street, Sandwich and his wife was Elizabeth Naylor (Nailor). Does anyone have anymore information.
Thanks, Paul Goldsmith.

Hi Paul
Another line for you to follow, there used to be a Clark family which ran the Guestling Mill, not a windmill but a brick building used for milling corn but mostly producing animal feed. It was located in Strand Street opposite the Kings Arms at the junction with Church Street St Marys. It is now used as residential accomodation and I think there is also a printing unit there.
My wife used to work for them back in 1972 and she thinks his name was Arthur.
Trust that this is of use to your search.
regards John

I may be wrong but as far as I know Knightrider Street only has about 15-20 properties in it so number 93 just doesn't sound right.

I was thinking the same thing Nick, but wondered if Knightrider St went right up the Mill Wall, past the houses where Dr Oxley and Anthony Bukeridge lived. There was a mill on The Mill Wall! From the book of old photos of Sandwich, it burnt down in 1895.There must have been a lot of cottages in that stretch if that was called Knightrider St. Wonder how it got it's name?

Maggie, I was told when small that Knightrider Street was so named because the smugglers used to ride down there at night to the Quay but with the K on the front it must have been the Knights doing the riding one would think. In Dad's Sandwich Street Names book put out by the Sandwich local history society it says " Knightrider Street - 1458: (also Knyghten Street) A street name in many ancient towns. Self explanatory?" The date is of an early reference.

You've started something here Pat! What about Guildcount, or Guildcourt Lane, Bowling St, Paradise Row?

Reply by Pat from Australia on 15 November 2008 at 03:23 - IP Logged
Well Maggie, from the same source, Paradise Row - 1550: (Paradisus - garden or park) A large garden existed here from 16th to end of 19th century. The Board School was built on part of "Paradise Garden" in 1877. The lower end of the street was called "Privie Lane" in 1466 when public conveniences were situated here. Isn't that fascinating, I didn't know they had such things back then, I thought they found the nearest bush !!
Guildcount Lane - 1532: No explanation has been found so far for this name: perhaps a corruption of Guildcourt, or of Gildard, a 14th century family of land holders in this area.
Pondicherry which we wondered about in a different thread ages ago is named from a settlement south of Madras, captured in 1793 when Admiral Peter Rainier, born in Sandwich and later the town's M.P. was serving in the East Indies Staion. May have been given this name in compliment to him or one of the many other Sandwich men in the Roayal Navy at that time. Mentioned in Medical Officer's report 1882.
Will track down Bowling Street when I have more time.
Apologies Paul for digressing from your original query like this.
Have just discovered that my brother's partner is not only descended from the
Gent family but the maternal side is
Fagg so she is more a Sandwich girl than I am even though she grew up in New Zealand. We'll probably all end up related at this rate.
