St Clement's Church Tower Appeal Sandwich, Kent

What's wrong with the Tower?

Inevitably over the centuries the salt winds and rain off the English Channel and the winter frosts have taken their toll on the Caen limestone of which the tower is built. Though the basic structure is sound, much of the elaborately carved Romanesque stonework is badly erroded, the surface is starting to laminate and pieces of stone ‘skin’ regularly fall onto the roofs of the church. stoneworkExtensive remedial action is needed before this starts to cause real damage to the recently, and expensively restored roofs. The battlements which form the top of the tower look, from the outside, to be in reasonable order, but on the inside the action of frost and wind has caused deep erosion and this potentially dangerous condition requires them to be completely replaced as soon as possible.

How you can help: Single Donations

Every donation made will help us to reach our goal. If you pay tax this will also qualify for Gift Aid as you have made the donation voluntarily and without any benefit in kind. Through Gift Aid we will be able to collect the tax paid at the basic rate on all gifts made in this way. For example: For every £1 given, we are able to reclaim 28.2p from the Inland Revenue Charities.

St Clement’s Lottery

This is being launched at the same time as the Appeal. Tickets for the Lottery can be purchased at £1 each for one month’s entry, or multiples thereof. You will be entered into a monthly draw. We are hoping that up to 1000 tickets will be sold for each month’s generous cash prizes.

Events

Your Tower Appeal Committee is putting together a programme of events to cover the first 12 months of the Appeal. This programme will be available from the church and also every person signing up for the lottery will automatically be sent all the details.
